TARA ITI • OCEAN SUITES • NEW ZEALAND

As “design doulas” to architect Ella Darby, we helped give birth to her truly unique architectural vision, and created an interior design in response that embodies the laid-back luxury of Tara Iti. Nestled in the dunes with full ocean frontage, these distinctive structures are reminiscent of the undulating sand, and suggest the outspread wings of the Fairy Tern which nest amongst their grasses.

The white sculptural roof form with two dramatic oculi is contrasted with warm, wide plank oak floors, and walls clad in lacquered linen, reclaimed oak, and planked macrocarpa. Antique brass details and custom bronze hardware are seen throughout. Comfy cedar banquettes anchor both the bedroom and indoor/outdoor room, and each space opens fully to take advantage of the crisp, clean ocean air. In the bedroom, the custom bed is made from slabs of ancient Kauri wood, and is paired with floating oak side tables. All of our custom millwork was made in collaboration with a local Kiwi vendor, and we partnered with Ella Darby on the striking cast concrete bathtub. The furnishings throughout are a combination of custom and iconic mid-century designs, all with strong sculptural forms and always with an eye to comfort.
